About HDI. Hexamethylene Diisocyanate (a.k.a. HDI) is an organic compound, one of the main aliphatic diisocyanates. It is highly reactive and can undergo several addition reactions across the CN double bonds, in such a way that a myriad of commercial products can be obtained from reactions with alcohols, carboxylic acids, and amines. Industrial HDI manufacture is primarily based on the corresponding amine: hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The most common method of preparing HDI on a commercial scale involves the reaction of HMDA with phosgene. Hexamethylene diisocyanate may also be produced from the reaction of HMDA with urea and an alcohol followed by decomposition of the intermediate carbamate.

HDI Handling. Like other organic isocyanates, HDI is a hazardous chemical, and its handling is regulated in virtually all industrialized countries. Being sensitive to moisture, HDI must be stored in a volume tank under dry nitrogen blanketing, or kept in the original containers.

HDI Production. The classic route for HDI commercial production is based on phosgenation, in which HMDA is reacted with phosgene, yielding Hexamethylene Diisocyanate. This organic isocyanate can also be produced via the so-called non-phosgene routes, based on the reaction of HMDA with urea/alcohol or carbonate. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of HDI are listed below.

  • Hexamethylenediamine + phosgene (phosgenation)

HDI Uses. The uses and applications of Hexamethylene Diisocyanate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Hexamethylene Diisocyanate are purity greater than 98% (GC).
