Report Abstract
This report presents an economic analysis for Propanol production from glycerol in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Propanol production and related Propanol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Propanol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Propanol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Propanol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Propanol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Propanol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Propanol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
n-Propanol. Propanol (a.k.a. n-Propanol, 1-Propanol) is a primary alcohol with the formula C3H7OH. It appears as a clear, colorless, flammable liquid with a slight odor resembling that of ethanol. It is soluble in water and in a variety of organic solvents. Propanol occurs in nature in crude fusel oils and as fermentation and decomposition products of various vegetables. Industrially, it is produced by hydroformilation of ethylene to propionaldehyde, which is then hydrogenated to Propanol.
Raw Material
Glycerol. Crude glycerol is a byproduct of biodiesel production, containing impurities like methanol and soaps. It is used in animal feed, as a raw material for chemical synthesis, and in biogas production. Collected from transesterification processes, it is stored as a viscous liquid. Purification can yield refined glycerol for pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
