Report Abstract
In this report, epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A (BPA) are used in the production of Liquid Epoxy Resin (LER) only. The economic analysis considers a plant located in the United States. Epichlorohydrin and BPA are reacted in the presence of an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to form Liquid Epoxy Resin.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Epoxy Resins production and related Epoxy Resins production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Epoxy Resins production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Epoxy Resins plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Epoxy Resins plant operating costs (Opex).
The Epoxy Resins production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Epoxy Resins plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Epoxy Resins plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Epoxy Resin. Liquid epoxy resin is an essential component in the production of coatings, adhesives, and composite materials. Its excellent adhesion, chemical resistance, and mechanical properties make it ideal for protective coatings in marine, automotive, and electronics industries. Liquid epoxy resin is manufactured through the reaction of epichlorohydrin with bisphenol-A. It is stored as a viscous liquid and typically supplied directly to formulators for use in a variety of industrial and consumer applications.
Raw Materials
Epichlorohydrin. Epichlorohydrin is a key raw material in the production of epoxy resins and glycerol, widely used in coatings, adhesives, and elastomers. It is valued for its reactivity and versatility in chemical manufacturing. Epichlorohydrin is produced by reacting allyl chloride with hypochlorous acid. It is stored as a liquid and must be handled with care due to its hazardous nature.
BPA. Bisphenol A is a high volume production organic compound, synthesized from phenol and acetone. It has been produced in commercial since the 1950's and is mostly used in the production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Nowadays its use in products with contact with food has been decreasing, mostly in the United States, due to a rising concern on the negative health effects it might cause.
