ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/184-B.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) Reaction; (2) Purification; and (3) By-product treatment.

Reaction. Initially, a stream composed of make-up and recycle acetylene passes through a vaporizer, along with a countercurrent stream of fresh and recycle acetic acid. The addition of acetic acid to acetylene, in the vapor phase, yields Vinyl Acetate Monomer. Excess of acetylene is used, at a molar ratio of 2 - 5 in relation to acetic acid. Such feed is preheated by heat exchange against a gaseous stream leaving the reaction zone and steam, and then fed to a tube reactor where the addition reaction takes place.

Purification. The mixture leaving the reactor is cooled, and excess acetylene is separated and recycled to the reaction. The crude VAM stream obtained is further purified in distillation columns, yielding acetic acid, also recycled, and pure VAM.

By-product treatment. The gaseous stream from the first purification column is distilled to recover acetylene, which is recycled to the cooling step. The acetaldehyde contained in bottom stream is sent to another column and obtained as column overhead stream as by-product. The residual Vinyl Acetate in the stream from the bottom of the Acetaldehyde column is recovered by means of a last distillation system comprising two columns and is sent to purification section.

ICC - Short Description: This feasibility study examines the economics of a process producing Vinyl Acetate from acetic acid and acetylene. In the process examined, acetic acid and acetylene react in the vapor phase in the presence of a supported metal catalyst to produce vinyl acetate. The economic analysis performed is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
