ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Polypropylene. Polypropylene is one of the most widely used thermoplastics in the world, known for its lightweight, durability, and versatility. It is extensively used in packaging, automotive parts, textiles, and consumer goods. Polypropylene is produced through the polymerization of propylene gas, typically derived from petroleum or natural gas refining. It is supplied in the form of pellets and can be easily stored and transported. Its broad applications and recyclability make it a staple in the plastics industry.

Raw Material

Propane. The feedstock to a PDH process unit is propane. Propane is recovered from propane-rich liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) streams from natural gas processing plants. Propane may also be obtained in smaller amounts as a by-product of petroleum refinery operations, such as hydrocracking and fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC).

ICC - Short Description: This study presents the economics of Polypropylene (PP) Homopolymer production from propane. In this two-step process, first polymer grade (PG) propylene is produced via dehydrogenation of propane, carried out in a moving-bed reactor, similarly to UOP Oleflex. Gaseous PG propylene is then polymerized to PP in fluidized-bed reactors (FBRs), similarly to the Grace UNIPOL process. The economic analysis performed assumes a plant located in the United States.
ICC - Main Product: Polypropylene
