Report Abstract
This report presents a techno-economic analysis of Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG) production from tetrahydrofuran (THF) polymerization in the United States. The THF is polymerized by a strongly acidic catalyst, forming PTMEG.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Polyether production and related Polyether production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Polyether production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Polyether plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Polyether plant operating costs (Opex).
The Polyether production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Polyether plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Polyether plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
PTMEG. Polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) is a key intermediate in the production of high-performance elastomers, spandex fibers, and thermoplastic polyurethanes. PTMEG's flexibility and durability make it a preferred component in various industries including textiles, automotive, and medical devices. PTMEG is produced through the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF), typically derived from butanediol. It is stored as a viscous liquid at room temperature and is directly supplied to manufacturers of specialty materials and elastomers.
Raw Material
Tetrahydrofuran. THF is a five-membered cyclic ether with wide application in the chemical industry. Its most important area of application from the standpoint of quantity and turnover is polymerization with simultaneous ring opening to give poly(tetramethylene oxide). THF is also used extensively in the varnish and film industries and as a co-solvent for printing inks and adhesives.
