ICC - Process Overview Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-overview/001-E.jpg
ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Methanol. Methanol is one of the most important chemical raw materials, used as a solvent, starting material in the production of chemicals and in the fuel sector. Currently, more than 95% of commercial methanol is synthetically produced from synthesis gas, or syngas, which is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Raw Material

Synthesis Gas. Synthesis Gas is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide used as a feedstock for producing chemicals like ammonia, methanol, and hydrocarbons via the Fischer-Tropsch process. Synthesis gas is generated from natural gas or coal gasification and is stored as a pressurized gas. Its balanced composition makes it a key intermediate in industrial chemical production.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/001-E.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Methanol synthesis; and (2) purification.

Methanol synthesis. The syngas feed is compressed and mixed with recycle gas and fed to the methanol synthesis reaction system, where CO and CO2 react with hydrogen to generate methanol. The system outlet gas is mainly comprised of methanol, water vapor, unconverted hydrogen, CO and CO2. This stream is cooled, and methanol and water are separated from the gases by condensation. The separated gas is recycled with a small purge. The water-methanol condensate stream is sent to be purified.

Purification. The purification area is composed of three distillation columns. The topping column removes the dissolved gases from the crude methanol stream. In the pressurized methanol column, part of the methanol produced is obtained from the top of the column while the bottoms, still containing methanol, is sent to the atmospheric column to recover the remaining methanol.

ICC - Short Description: This report presents a techno-economic study of Methanol production from synthesis gas (syngas) in the United States. In this process, MMethanol is synthesized from syngas in a dual reactor system, which consists in an isothermal reactor combined in series with a gas-cooled reactor.

Other Methanol Production Cost Reports

Methanol Production from Naphtha

This report presents an economic analysis of Methanol production from naphtha in the United States. In this process, naphtha undergoes partial oxidation producing syngas, which is then converted to Methanol.

Details: 1,700 kta United States-based plant | Q3 2024 | 107 pages | Issue D From $1,199 USD

The cost analyses presented in this report target a 1,700 kta (kilo metric ton per annum per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Methanol Production from Coal

This feasibility study approaches the economics of Methanol production in China via coal gasification. In this process, coal is initially gasified to produce syngas. This syngas is then converted to Methanol in a dual reactor system comprising an isothermal reactor in series with a gas-cooled reactor.

Ethylene Glycol Production from Carbon Dioxide

This study presents the economics of Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) production from carbon dioxide (CO2) in the United States using an electrochemical process similar to Liquid Light process. Initially, CO2 is electrochemically reduced and acidified into oxalic acid. Then, oxalic acid is esterified with methanol producing dimethyl oxalate, which is hydrogenated forming MEG.
