ICC - Process Overview Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-overview/208-E.jpg
ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

LLDPE. LLDPE (a.k.a. Linear Low Density Polyethylene) is one of the three main types of polyethylene. It is a copolymer of ethylene and alpha-olefins. The most common comonomers (also referred to as short-chain branches) used commercially are 1-butene, 1-hexene, and 1-octene. The physical and mechanical properties of LLDPE are functions of density, type, and amount of comonomer, molecular weight (MW), and molecular weight distribution (MWD). Conventional LLDPE differs from Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) primarily by having a narrower molecular weight distribution and by not containing long-chain branching.

Raw Materials

Ethylene. Ethylene is known as a key building block for the petrochemical industry, being one of the largest-volume petrochemical produced worldwide. It is widely used as chemical intermediate in the production of several end products, including plastics, resins and fibers. Ethylene is largely produced by thermal cracking of petroleum-based feedstocks, in the presence of steam. It is stored in a liquid state under high pressure or at low temperatures. However, ethylene is, most of times, directly supplied to its consumers.
Chemicals.
1-Hexene. Hexene is any alkene isomer with molecular formula C6H12. The most important Hexene is the 1-Hexene, which is largely employed as a comonomer in the production of polyethylene (HDPE and LLDPE). It is also used in the production of linear aldehyde heptanal. On an industrial scale, 1-Hexene is typically produced via ethylene oligomerization and on-purpose processes, such as extractive distillation from Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbons.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/208-E.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises four major sections: (1) Polymerization; (2) Degassing; and (3) Finishing.

Polymerization. Since the catalysts used in the process are sensitive to some impurities in the raw materials feed, the monomers are purified before being fed to the bottom of the reactor, where ethylene is polymerized in combination with 1-hexene in a reaction loop consisting of a reactor, a compressor and a heat exchanger. The copolymerization reaction is conducted in gas-phase fluidized beds of granular polyethylene resin with trace of metallocene catalyst. While the compressor circulates the reaction gas and provides the required agitation, the external cooler removes reaction heat from the circulating gas. The reaction is carried out at low temperatures (80 - 110 °C) and low pressures of (15 - 35) bar.

Degassing. The granular PE powder from the reactor is conveyed to a Purge Bin. In the Purge Bin, residual hydrocarbons are stripped with a nitrogen purge, and the catalyst is deactivated with steam. The purged gas is cooled and fed to two separators, in which condensed reactants are recovered and directly pumped back to the reactor, while uncondensed gas taken is purged.

Finishing. The resulting polymer stream is further fed into an extruder, which is used to incorporate the required additives, as well as to pelletize the polymer. The product is then sent to product blending and storage.
