ICC - Process Overview Text:
Products

Hydrochloric Acid. Hydrogen Chloride (HCl), commonly found as hydrochloric acid (a.k.a. muriatic acid) when dissolved in water, is a highly important industrial chemical. Hydrochloric acid has widespread applications in various industries, with major uses in steel pickling, pH control, water treatment, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis. It is also employed in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, dyes, and in food processing. Hydrogen chloride is primarily produced through the direct synthesis of hydrogen and chlorine, or as a by-product of chlorination reactions in various organic processes. The HCl gas can be absorbed in water to produce aqueous hydrochloric acid, which is the form most widely used industrially.

Caustic Soda. Causic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.

Raw Material

Sodium Chloride. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the salt naturally occurring in sea water. Sodium chloride (as aqueous solution, i.e., brine or solid) is widely used in the chemical industry as a feedstock for the production of chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and other sodium-based compounds through electrolysis.

ICC - Short Description: This report presents the economics of Hydrochloric Acid production via an integrated plant comprising: 1) a typical chlor-alkali electrolysis process using membrane cells; and 2) the production of Hydrochloric Acid from hydrogen and chlorine. A 35 wt% Hydrochloric Acid solution is obtained as the final product and 50 wt% caustic soda is obtained as co-product in this process. The analysis is based on plant located in the United States.

Other Hydrochloric Acid Production Cost Reports

Hydrochloric Acid Production from Sodium Chloride and Sulfur

Feasibility analysis of a typical Hargreaves process for Hydrochloric Acid production from sodium chloride and sulfur in the USA. In this process, first sulfur is subjected to an oxidation reaction producing sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide and sodium chloride are then heated up to the point in which they start a spontaneous and exothermic reaction that produces hydrogen chloride, which is subsequently absorbed in water to produce Hydrochloric Acid as the final product. Sodium sulfate is generated as a by-product.

Details: 15 kta United States-based plant | Q3 2024 | 107 pages | Issue D From $799 USD

The cost analyses presented in this report target a 15 kta (kilo metric ton per annum per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Hydrochloric Acid Production from Hydrogen and Chlorine

This study analysis the economics of Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) production from hydrogen and chlorine in the United States. The process examined is a typical synthesis of Hydrogen Chloride via the direct reaction of the elements. In this process, hydrogen and chlorine, undergo a direct reaction forming hydrogen chloride, which is subsequently passed through an absorber to produce a 35 wt% hydrochloric acid as final product.
