ICC - Process Overview Text: <h6>Product</h6> <p><b>Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether</b>. Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether (a.k.a. ETBE, 2-Ethoxy-2-Methyl-Propane) is an aliphatic ether having ethyl and tert-butyl as the two alkyl components, manufactured by etherification of isobutylene with ethanol, in the presence of an acidic ion-exchange resin catalyst. ETBE has a lower Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) and better octane properties than MTBE. As a pure component, ETBE appears as clear light yellow liquid. It is miscible with alcohol, ethyl ether, and Slightly miscible with water.</p> <h6>Raw Materials</h6> <p><b>Raffinate-1</b>. Raffinate-1 is a C4 residual stream primarily consisting of isobutylene, 1-butylene, 2-butylenes, and butanes, obtained from the extraction of 1,3-butadiene from crude C4s stream, which is one of the products of the naphtha steam cracking processes.</p> <b>Ethanol</b>. Ethanol is a versatile solvent and chemical intermediate used in personal care products, coatings, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a biofuel component in gasoline blends. Ethanol is produced by fermentation of sugars or starches and is stored as a liquid. Its role in biofuels contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels.</p>

ICC - Short Description: This study presents an economical analysis of Ethyl tert-Butyl Ether (ETBE) production from FCC C4 raffinate and ethanol using a process similar to UOP's Ethermax process for isobutylene etherification in China. In this process, the etherification reaction of isobutylene from FCC C4 raffinate stream with ethanol is conducted in two steps, the first step being in a conventional reactor and the second in a reactive distillation column.

ETBE Production from Butane

This report presents the feasibility analysis of an on-purpose Ethyl tert-Butyl Ether (ETBE) production plant from butane and ethanol in the United States. Initially, n-butane is isomerized to isobutane, which is then subjected to a dehydrogenation, yielding isobutylene. In the final step, generated isobutylene and ethanol react leading to the formation of ETBE. These steps are similar to Butamer, Oleflex and Ethermax processes in sequence.
