ICC - Process Overview Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-overview/175-B.jpg
ICC - Process Overview Text:
Products

1-Butene. 1-butene, cis-2-butene, trans-2-butene, isobutylene and butadiene are usually coproduced as a mixture - referred to as C4 fraction - from petroleum refinery/petrochemical process. Typically, for obtaining pure 1-butene, C4 fraction is sent a selective extraction of isobutylene with sulfuric acid, butadiene selective hydrogenation and distillation for 2-butenes separation. An alternative means of producing 1-butene is the ethylene dimerization. Butenes are mainly used as alkylate and polymer gasoline, in fuel applications, and as co-monomers in the production of some polymers. 1-butene, particularly, is mostly used as a comonomer for LLDPE production, and as a comonomer for modifying high density polyethylene (HDPE).

Gasoline. Gasoline is a mixture of hydrocarbons containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms. It is one of the most important products resulting from crude oil refining.

Raw Materials

Ethylene. Ethylene is known as a key building block for the petrochemical industry, being one of the largest-volume petrochemical produced worldwide. It is widely used as chemical intermediate in the production of several end products, including plastics, resins and fibers. Ethylene is largely produced by thermal cracking of petroleum-based feedstocks, in the presence of steam. It is stored in a liquid state under high pressure or at low temperatures. However, ethylene is, most of times, directly supplied to its consumers.
Chemicals.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/175-B.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises the following major sections: (1) dimerization; and (2) separation & purification.

* Dimerization. Initially, fresh ethylene and recycled ethylene are fed to the dimerization reactor, along with catalyst and co-catalyst diluted in butene. The dimerization occurs in the liquid phase, at mild conditions. Reaction heat is continuously removed by means of an external cooler. The reactor effluent, containing the 1-Butene produced, is routed to separation steps downstream.

* Separation & purification. This section comprises essentially separation and purification steps for isolating the 1-Butene produced. The dimerization reactor effluent is initially passed through a flash vessel and then through evaporators, in such a way that most of the hydrocarbons in that stream vaporize and spent catalyst is discharged. The gaseous streams are combined, liquified and passed through a distillation column, in which ethylene is separated and recycled to dimerization. Finally, in a last distillation step, 1-Butene with a purity of 99.5 wt % is separated from residual oligomers.

ICC - Short Description: This study presents the costs associated with the construction of an industrial plant producing 1-Butene from ethylene in the United States. This study analyzes a process similar to the Axens/SABIC AlphaButol technology. In the process under analysis, ethylene is dimerized into butenes with high selectivity for 1-Butene. Gasoline (C6+ stream) is generated as by-product.
