Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Adiponitrile production from butadiene. In the process examined, adiponitrile is generated by the two-stage hydrocyanation of butadiene. The economic analysis performed assumes a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Adiponitrile production and related Adiponitrile production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Adiponitrile production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Adiponitrile plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Adiponitrile plant operating costs (Opex).
The Adiponitrile production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Adiponitrile plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Adiponitrile plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Adiponitrile. Adiponitrile is an organic compound used as a precursor to nylon 6,6, an important polymer for textiles, plastics, and automotive applications. Its role in producing high-strength materials is critical to multiple industries. Adiponitrile is synthesized through the electrochemical hydrodimerization of acrylonitrile and is stored as a liquid. Its importance in the production of durable, high-performance materials makes it a key industrial chemical.
Raw Materials
Butadiene. Butadiene is a commodity mainly produced as a byproduct of ethylene crackers. More specifically, it is extracted from the C4 hydrocarbons stream in naphtha-based crackers. The largest single use of butadiene is in the production of SBR and styrene-butadiene latexes.
Hydrogen Cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide is a volatile, flammable and highly toxic gas in temperatures above 25 ºC. Otherwise, it is a dangerous transparent liquid; its storage and transport are prohibited in certain locations. HCN’s range of applications includes its use as an intermediate in the production of sodium or potassium cyanide. It may also be used as a disinfectant for plague-infected ships and houses. HCN is obtained in industrial plants by the endothermic reaction between ammonia and natural gas (methane) using a platinum-rhodium catalyst. Such plants are necessarily integrated to consumer facilities.
