ICC - Process Overview Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-overview/007-M.jpg
ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Glacial Acrylic Acid. Glacial acrylic acid is a highly concentrated form of acrylic acid, valued for its role in the production of superabsorbent polymers, used in personal hygiene products such as diapers and sanitary products, as well as in paints and coatings. Glacial acrylic acid is produced through the oxidation of propylene and stored as a clear, highly corrosive liquid. Its high purity and reactivity make it an important chemical for polymerization and copolymerization processes in numerous industries.

Raw Materials

Chemicals.
3-Hydroxypropionic Acid. 3-Hydroxypropionic Acid (a.k.a. 3-HP) is an organic compound used as a building block for bio-based chemicals, including acrylic acid and biodegradable polymers. It is gaining importance in sustainable chemical processes. 3-hydroxypropionic acid is produced through the fermentation of renewable feedstocks and is stored as a liquid solution. It plays a vital role in the transition toward bio-based materials and green chemistry.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/007-M.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises the following main sections: (1) Dehydration; (2) Separation; and (3) Purification.

Dehydration. The aqueous solution of 3-hydroxypropionic acid is passed through a reactor column, packed with gamma-alumina catalyst where the 3-HP is dehydrated to acrylic acid.

Separation. The product from dehydration is fed to an azeotropic distillation system, comprised of an extractive distillation column and a stripping column, for water removal. Toluene is used as azeotropic agent to facilitate the water removal.

Purification. The acrylic acid from azeotropic distillation is fed to the crude acrylic acid distillation for removal of remaining impurities, and finally submitted to a melt crystallization carried out in multitube exchangers. After operating cycles (alternating crystallizing/melting stages), glacial acrylic acid is obtained.

ICC - Short Description: This report presents the economics of Acrylic Acid production from 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP). 3-HP is submitted to a dehydration reaction to generate Glacial Acrylic Acid. The reaction is carried out in vapor phase in a reactor column. The economic analysis approaches a plant located in the United States.
